Semen analysis after your vasectomy

Testing your semen after your vasectomy

To confirm that your vasectomy has been successful and that no sperm remain, you’ll need to complete a semen analysis three months after your procedure. We’ll remind you when it’s time to do this.

Until you’ve received a clear semen test result, it’s important to continue using alternative contraception — no one wants any unexpected surprises. Once your test confirms no sperm are present, you can move forward with confidence. No sperm, no worries.

How to test semen after vasectomy

At SNIP, we offer two options for post-vasectomy semen testing. You can choose either a laboratory-based test, which is included at no extra cost, or a SpermCheck home testing kit, available for an additional fee. If you’re unsure which option is best for you, our doctors are happy to discuss this during your procedure.

OPTION ONE

SpermCheck Home Testing Kit

SpermCheck Vasectomy is a convenient option for those who prefer to complete their semen test at home rather than visiting a laboratory.

The SpermCheck test is FDA-approved and has been shown to be as accurate as standard laboratory testing.* We’ll send you a reminder when your test is due at three months post-procedure. Once you receive a clear result, you can be confident that your vasectomy has worked.

A SpermCheck Home Testing Kit can be purchased on the day of your vasectomy or ordered online when your test is due.

OPTION TWO

Laboratory test

If you choose a laboratory test, we’ll send you a reminder at the three-month mark along with instructions and the required form.

Your semen sample will need to be delivered to the laboratory within 60 minutes of collection. If this timing is difficult, the home testing option may be more suitable.

We’ll contact you by email with your results within 3–4 working days, confirming whether your vasectomy has been successful.

* No method of contraception is 100% effective. Clearance from vasectomy by either method of Semen Analysis indicates greater than 99.9% lifelong sterility. Reading and interpretation of the SpermCheck Vasectomy result is performed by the user, Snip Vasectomy Clinic takes no responsibility for incorrect reading or interpretation of the test.
