Testing your semen after a vasectomy

Using your at-home SpermCheck Kit

So… it’s been three months since your vasectomy. That means it’s time to confirm that the procedure has worked. To check that you are sperm-free, you’ll need to complete a semen test. Until you receive a clear result, it’s essential to continue using contraception — no one wants any unexpected surprises.

On the day you receive your reminder message, it’s time to use your at-home SpermCheck Kit. Below is a simple, step-by-step (PG-rated) guide to help you complete the test correctly. Once you’ve been given the all-clear, you’re good to go — no sperm, no worries.

What’s included in your kit

Your at-home SpermCheck Kit contains
  • SpermCheck Device
  • Solution Bottle

How to use the SpermCheck Kit

A practical demonstration is available showing exactly how to use your at-home SpermCheck Kit.

It’s time to check your sperm

STEP 1:

Prepare your kit and make yourself comfortable.

STEP 2:

Produce a semen sample, aiming to ejaculate directly into the collection container.

STEP 3:

Set a timer for 20 minutes and allow the sample to rest.

STEP 4:

After 20 minutes, use the transfer device to gently mix the sample. Still using the transfer device, draw up the fluid to the frosted line.

STEP 5:

Remove the cap from the solution bottle and dispense the fluid from the transfer device into the bottle.

STEP 6:

Replace the cap and gently mix by slowly rotating the bottle. Do not shake, as this may affect the accuracy of the test.

STEP 7:

Wait for 2 minutes. While waiting, unwrap the SpermCheck device.

STEP 8:

Remove the cap from the solution bottle and carefully place five drops into the window marked “S” on the test device.

STEP 9:

Set a timer and wait for 7 minutes.

STEP 10:

Read your result at exactly 7 minutes. Reading the test later may result in a faint line appearing and could give an inaccurate result.

Understanding your results

A clear result: There is no line at the “T” marker at 7 minutes.

This means you are sperm-free and your vasectomy has been successful. Ongoing contraception is no longer required*.

A not clear result: A line (even a faint one) appears at the “T” marker at 7 minutes.

This indicates that sperm are still present. This does not necessarily mean the vasectomy has failed — there may be residual or inactive sperm remaining. Please contact us by email and we’ll advise you on the next steps.

* No method of contraception is 100% effective. Clearance following vasectomy indicates greater than 99.9% lifelong sterility. The SpermCheck result is read and interpreted by the user. SNIP accepts no responsibility for incorrect reading or interpretation of the test.

What happens next?

Once you’ve completed your semen test and received a clear result, the process is complete. You can be confident that your vasectomy has worked. Life continues exactly as before – just without the worry.
