Days 4–7
What’s normal

You should notice gradual improvement.

Helpful tips

Light walking is fine, but avoid strenuous activity.

Weeks 2–3
What’s normal

Some lingering swelling or bruising can persist – this varies from person to person.

Helpful tips

This is part of normal healing and usually settles on its own.

3 Months
What’s normal

Time for your follow-up sperm test to confirm success.

Helpful tips

We’ll remind you – this step is essential.

Common recovery symptoms

You may experience:

  • Mild swelling or bruising of the scrotum
  • Occasional sensitivity or twinges for up to 2–4 weeks
  • A small amount of blood in semen (rare and usually short-lived)

Contact us if you notice:

  • Increasing redness, swelling or worsening pain after day four
  • Fever or feeling generally unwell
  • Ongoing bleeding or discharge from the incision site

Recovery tips

  • Support is key: Wear snug, supportive underwear for at least 7–10 days
  • Use ice: Apply ice packs for around 15 minutes at a time during the first couple of hours
  • Rest properly: Avoid heavy lifting, running or cycling for at least seven days
  • Pain relief: Use ibuprofen as directed, or paracetamol if ibuprofen isn’t suitable

Most people return to light desk-based work within 1–2 days. Jobs involving physical labour may require a longer recovery period.

What should I do after a vasectomy?

Learn more about recovery after the Snip by watching part three of our four-part video consultation series.

What to avoid after a vasectomy

Strenuous exercise such as running, weightlifting or sports
Physically demanding work
Swimming in pools, spas or the sea
Baths (showers are fine)
Unprotected sex until you’ve received clearance. Sexual activity can resume when you feel comfortable, as long as contraception is used until you have the all-clear.

Your 3-month post-vasectomy test

(IMPORTANT)

Your vasectomy is not confirmed as successful until your sperm test shows no sperm present.

  • We’ll send you a reminder
  • Complete your semen test at 12 weeks after the procedure
  • No test = no confirmation = not safe yet

Remember: Continue using alternative contraception until your test result is clear.
