The vasectomy procedure

What to expect during the vasectomy procedure

Our scalpel-free vasectomy technique is a quick, effective and minimally invasive procedure. It uses a precision, laser-like device called a Hyfrecator to seal the tubes that carry sperm. This modern approach is designed to minimise discomfort and speed up recovery, meaning most people are ready to leave the clinic within around 30 minutes of arrival.

The snip procedure: step by step

Welcome in

After checking in at reception, your doctor will meet you in the waiting area and escort you through to the procedure room.

Any last questions?

Before starting, your doctor will talk things through and answer any final questions you may have. You’re in experienced hands — our clinicians have carried out thousands of vasectomy procedures.

Let’s get started

You’ll lie comfortably on the procedure couch (socks can stay on). We’ll explain each step as we go, so you always know what’s happening.

Local anaesthetic

A fast-acting local anaesthetic is used to numb a small area of skin at the front of the scrotum.

Scalpel-free and stitch-free

Once the area is numb, a Hyfrecator is used to create a tiny keyhole opening — around 3 mm in size. No scalpels and no stitches are required. Through this opening, the vas deferens (the tubes that carry sperm) are gently located and sealed.

Fast and effective

The procedure itself takes just a few minutes and is completed through this single, small entry point.

Driving home

You can usually drive yourself home afterwards. We simply recommend taking things easy for the rest of the day.

Recover in comfort

As the anaesthetic wears off (typically after about an hour), you may notice mild discomfort. Rest for the remainder of the day, apply ice as advised, and relax — this is a good time to put your feet up and unwind.

What’s next?

Once you’ve recovered, life continues exactly as before — just without the ongoing worry. A scalpel-free vasectomy does not affect hormones, sex drive, sexual performance or enjoyment.

Next, find out what to do after your vasectomy and when you’ll need to complete your post-procedure sperm test.

STEP 3: After The Procedure

More effective than any other method of contraception

A vasectomy is one of the most effective long-term contraception options available. In fact, vasectomies are 10 times more effective than women being sterilised and 20 times more effective than other forms of contraception.
